A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit filed in the United States
District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. The lawsuit alleges that Wal-Mart
discriminated against African-Americans on the basis of race in recruiting and hiring
over-the-road truck drivers in Wal-Mart’s private fleet. Although Wal-Mart denies
the allegations, the parties have agreed to a settlement.
Wal-Mart has agreed to pay $17.5 million into a Settlement Fund. Payments of Class
Members claims, attorney fees and expenses, and costs of administering the Settlement
will be paid from the Settlement Fund.
The Court has preliminarily approved the Settlement and has certified the Class.
Final approval of the Court will be issued after the Fairness Hearing, which will
be held on June 30, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. in the United States District Court for the
Eastern District of Arkansas, 500 West Capitol Avenue, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201.
